Note Taking

Younger Children – “Tally Mark” Notes
Some of the first “notes” I took as a child were the tally mark kind. A kind older lady wrote down keywords from the sermon (after looking over the sermon outline), scanned enough copies for the congregation’s children, and handed them to us.Younger children learning how to read and write cannot keep up with actual notes, but that doesn’t mean they can’t listen to the sermon. Ask them to listen for keywords you’ve picked out from the sermon outline (for example, “seed”, “sower”, and “soil” might be some keywords on a lesson about the Parable of the Sower). This helps train them to listen to the sermon and is a step toward taking their own notes one day.

Below are templates for different ages. Some versions for older children also include an area for writing down scriptures from the sermon.

example

  1. Lesson Title.
  2. Date.
  3. Keyword list. An adult should glance over the sermon outline and pick out keywords that will probably be mentioned a lot, e.g., “lost”, “son”, and “father” in a sermon about the prodigal son.
  4. Tally marks. This is the section for the children to fill in. Whenever the preacher says one of the keywords, the child should make a tally mark on that line.
